What You Probably Didn’t Know About South Africa’s Vibrant Fabrics Industry

South Africa’s fabrics industry is in direct competition with cheap imports from the east, especially China. However, in a push to revive the local textile industry, government continues to show its support in recent years with significant investment in the sector.

The main aim of the South African fabrics industry is to utilise all the human, natural and technological resources available to it, in order to make it the preferred international supplier of apparel and textiles. It is a huge industry, and a big jobs creator in the country. In fact, in 2014, the Clothing, Textiles, Footwear and Leather industry was responsible for upwards of 14$ of all manufacturing jobs in South Africa.

The fabrics industry accounts for between 60 000 and 80 000 jobs in our economy, and contributes upwards of 8% of the country’s gross domestic product. It’s easy to see why this sector is one of our most important industries, and why government continues to invest so heavily in it.
